No one will look at her and see a hill scum girl ever again!īut then, she wonders, for possibly the first time, if this place is so great, why did my mother run away?Īfter this brief intro, our hardy heroine takes us back to her arrival in Boston. She thinks that now she will finally have a family that will love her, and that “the pearls of culture, wisdom, and breeding” will protect her from the scorn she is used to. I feel briefly as though we are back with our Cathy, as Heaven tortures and mixes metaphors for a bit. Gothic house! Heaven takes a couple pages to have feelings about finally being in her mother’s home before flashing back to her earlier meeting with her grandmother and step-grandfather. As Lydia unravels the reasons behind Joey’s suicide, she is confronted with the unwanted intrusion of her own past–a horrific occurrence when she was a child that tore apart her world and ripped her from all sense of security she had ever known. She is particularly drawn to Joey–and the story opens with his suicide at the bookstore. Main character, Lydia, works at a bookstore that allows “BookFrogs” –homeless readers –to be regular visitors. I read it in one day, couldn’t put it down. It’s very difficult to pull off a good mystery and a strong family drama that still is light enough to enjoy reading. Great characters, convincing story, two mysteries, a recent and a cold case connected by multiple threads. Sophocles wrote three tragedies about Oedipus’ family, though they were never written or performed as a connected trilogy.
